A sweet Super Bowl story, even for non-sports fans like me
It was weird seeing all those Giants fans all over the city today. Weirder than seeing them, in their Giants hats and jerseys and shit, was hearing them bellow “Go Giants!” I don’t understand sports, but more than that, I don’t understand that level of fandom.
That said, I have a Super Bowl story that touched even me: My step-father’s 84-year-old brother Norman has had Giants tickets for probably 40 years. In that time, whenever the team has gone to the Super Bowl, Norman has never won the seat-holder’s lottery for tickets. This year was no exception, and he was bummed.
So Norman wrote a letter to the Giants’ management saying, “I’m 84 years old. I’ve had seats for 40 years. How much longer do I have to wait to go to the Super Bowl?” Someone from the management office called Norman two days later. They gave him two tickets. He took his grandson.
